Liability & Security

The success of Gridfinity as a business depends on providing a powerful yet secure grid computing platform to our customers. This grid is powered by (and depends on) members of the Internet community who run our software agent. We understand that such members must feel confident in the security of our agent and in the computational software we distribute or else we would not able to bring their computing power to market.

That being said, there are security risks inherent in every application downloaded from the Internet. Our members understand that while we have taken many steps to implement a security policy that mitigates the potential impact of the software we distribute, there is always the possibility that an application could cause harm to their data and/or systems. We do not audit the source code nor executables our customers submit for computation on the grid.

While we will take steps to avoid risks to members, Gridfinity cannot be held in any way liable for any damages caused as a result of the applications we distribute. Such applications remain the property and responsibility of our grid computing customers. By running our agent software, you agree not to hold Gridfinity liable for any reason whatsoever.

Privacy & Communications

General

Gridfinity takes privacy very seriously and respects the information our members provide to us. We ask for minimal information upon sign up and collect only what information is necessary to efficiently run our computing grid; basic computer specifications such as operating system type, number/speed of processors, and amount of memory and disk space are used by Gridfinity to assist in the process of distributing computational tasks and measuring the capacity of the grid.

Agent Software

The Gridfinity agent software installs neither spyware nor adware on your machine. Such resource consuming malware reduces the functioning and processing power of your machine and slows the rate at which you finish computational units. Please see our FAQ answer on this topic for more information and for recommended anti-malware programs.

Gridfinity may automatically update the agent software on your machine when newer versions become available. These updates are required in order for your machine to continue to receive and process computational units from our servers.

Web Site

Gridfinity automatically receives and records information in our server logs from your web browser such as your IP address and the resources you request from our site. Additionally, we use cookies that are stored on your computer in order to identify
your account and preferences when you use our site.

E-Mail Communication

Your email address will only be used to identify your account and to send you important service and account-related communications from Gridfinity. You may change the frequency and degree of other notifications you receive by updating your communication preferences at any time. Gridfinity does not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other companies.

Policy Updates

Gridfinity may update this policy at any time. We will notify you about significant changes in the way we treat personal information by sending a notice to your email address or by placing a notice and updated privacy policy on our site.

Questions

If you have questions about this privacy policy, please contact us at privacy@gridfinity.com.

Resources and Permissions

Gridfinity and its associated software is licensed only for use on machines in which the user has permission to install and continually run the software. Software should not be installed on any computers where the user does not have explicit permission to do so from the lawful owners of the computers. Gridfinity cannot be held liable in the event that software is installed on computers that the user has not obtained the proper authorization

Billing & Payouts

Grid Usage

Gridfinity calculates and bills grid usage a priori; a fixed fee for each unit computed on the grid is set and charged based on a random sampling of units from the computational task. The total cost to the customer for a computational task is calculated by multiplying this pre-determined per unit fee by the number of units in the computational task. For tasks that have units with roughly the same runtime, the random sampling should be equivalent to billing for exact usage time. For tasks that have uneven units, the sampling is necessary due to the heterogeneity of the grid nodes (i.e. different processor and memory speeds) and the difficulty in accurately measuring how long individual units took to compute.

Billing

Customers must have enough credit in their account to cover the entire computational task before it is executed on the grid. Credit can be accumulated by either computing computational units for other customers or by transferring funds from a Paypal account. Please see the FAQ question on funding an account for more information.

Special Payout Offer

After setting the computational unit cost for the customer, Gridfinity sets the computational unit payout for grid members. Grid members that sign up before August 31, 2007 are eligible to lock in 90% payouts for life. This payout rate entitles such users to receive 90% of the revenue that Gridfinity takes in, less direct costs to ensure quality.

For example, if Gridfinity bills a customer $0.50/unit for 10 units total (bill of $5.00), $4.50 (90% x $5.00) of that will be paid out assuming the task was completed by (90% users). Assuming 10 unique units are computed by 11 grid members (each user completes one unit, but a random unit is completed twice as a quality check), each user will receive (10/11) x $0.50 = $0.45 for his/her unit.

Normal Payout

Users who sign up after our special introductory period will still receive a per unit payout rate, but Gridfinity cannot guarantee it will be as high as the rate 90% members receive.
